FA Cup Preliminary Round | Cossham Street

First, credit where it’s due: Cossham Street has undergone a brilliant transformation since our last visit. The new 3G pitch and warm welcome made for a fantastic setting—even if the football gods had already decided to test our resolve before we’d even arrived.

A severe vehicle fire on the M4 caused total chaos, leaving half the squad stuck in gridlock and severely shortening our pre-match prep. With regular number one away on holiday, Nathan Smith stepped in between the sticks. Oddly enough, despite the 3-0 scoreline, Nathan spent most of the afternoon with surprisingly little to do, but the hosts made their few moments count.

That rough start on the motorway spilled onto the pitch almost immediately. Just six minutes in, a stray pass in midfield was pounced on by Mangotsfield, and Owen Pritchard broke forward to coolly dink the ball over the exposed Smith for 1-0.

To their credit, the Kingfishers dusted themselves off and took real control of the game.

Thatcham were genuinely unlucky not to level things up, with both Tooze and Dan Smith going close after some great spell work. But just as momentum was building, a costly mix-up at the back saw Denton robbed of possession, allowing Harlee Vozza to pounce and snatch a second for the Mangoes. Thatcham continued to push forward as half-time approached, but the ball just wouldn't drop for them.

The Kingfishers started the second half brightly after Elliot Emm replaced Kye Williams at the break. Tooze narrowly missed from close range, only to be flagged offside, before Donte Hamblin beat several defenders to whip in a cross, though Tooze’s header went straight into the keeper's arms.

An injury to Tombs forced an early change with Baines coming on at 52 minutes, followed by a double swap on 65 minutes as Polding replaced captain Willmoth, and new forward Hylton came on for Dan Smith. Hylton made an immediate impression, showing off a few neat feints before firing just over the bar.

As the clock ticked down, Shurvill came on for Tooze and got straight into the thick of it. But with Thatcham throwing men forward, Mangotsfield delivered the knockout blow. Stealing the ball deep in their own half, they broke quickly, and Pritchard slammed home his second of the afternoon to make it 3-0 and game over.

There was still time for one last roll of the dice at the death when Heholt played in Emm, who went close, but the assistant's flag put an end to the move.

It was a frustrating afternoon that ends our FA Cup run and marks a third consecutive defeat, but the effort and spells of good play were certainly there. The lads now have a well-earned week's break to regroup, reset, and clear the traffic out of their minds before we head off to Amersham on August 29th. Lets see what this week brings
